Phillips/Stewart Blacksmith Shop Site

Valley Road looking north

In the photo above showing Valley Road looking north from the intersection with Pleasant Valley Road the former Phillips blacksmith shop was located about where the first driveway to the right appears.

In addition to the gristmill, this is further evidence that the Phillips family was engaged in several economic endeavors, in addition to farming, that contributed to the potential of this area to develop into a village.

The blacksmith shop on this site is identified on an 1849 map and may date back to the 18th century. The shop is indicated on the 1860 and 1875 maps but has disappeared by 1903.
