WHEAT THRESHING PROGRAM: Station Activities
Wheat Planting: Plant wheat by hand. Then visit a field where our farmer uses horsedrawn equipment to prepare the ground for mechanical wheat planting. Weather, soil and the timing of your visit will determine what you see: plowing, harrowing, fertilizing or planting. Crops that you may see ripening in the field include corn, potatoes, pumpkins or even a late hay crop. Threshing: Join an old fashioned threshing bee where everyone is expected to help by using one of the earliest threshing tools--a flail. Each person will handle a stem of wheat, remove the straw, and learn how to separate the wheat from the chaff. Wheat Cleaning: Your group will turn the crank of a winnower (fanning mill), as a farmer explains the principles of mechanical wheat cleaning. Once the wheat is clean, each visitor will have a chance to use a hand cranked grinder to mill the wheat for use as animal feed or flour. You will see how by-products of the threshing and cleaning process are used by the farmers. Bread Baking and Tasting: Visit a circa
1900 kitchen and taste whole wheat bread made from the Farm’s
flour. Your group will take turns churning butter as our staff demonstrate
the basic techniques of milling and sifting flour, kneading dough and
baking bread in our 1904 Glenwood cookstove. |
