Role of Parents

In exchange for one child's participation in The Hatchery or FarmHands program, one parent must simultaneously volunteer his or her time at the Farm. Grandparent/grandchild arrangements are permitted.
A parent's role, in most instances, is to help the Farm staff involve visitors in the workings of a circa 1900 "family farm". On this type of farm, much of the work was done by hand, so opportunities for visitor participation are plentiful.
A parent may work alongside a staff person, an experienced volunteer, or alone depending on his/her familiarity with the activity and the degree of comfort/confidence working with visitors. Hatchery parents will work primarily with elementary, kindergarten or Pre-K school groups. FarmHands parents often work with the general public, including families and small groups.
Parents receive written information and some informal training relative to their assigned activity, as well as help in "how to" involve visitors in the activity. Some examples of activities are baking, making fence rails, mixing animal feeds, planting or harvesting crops, caring for animals, etc. Activities vary by season, and within seasons, so it is possible for parents to assist with 2 or 3 different activities in the course of a program.
Each parent will spend 1 or 2 of their days working as an assistant to the teacher.
In some instances, parents may have an opportunity to work on farming, restoration or office projects.
