Restored by the Friends of Howell Farm fro 1989-1991, the buiding is now back in use as a storage facility for ice cut from the pond.  It holds about 25 tons of ice, which, if not used would last throughout the year with about a 30% loss.  During the mid-to-late 19th century, the ice was probably used for shipping the farm's milk and milk productes to market, or to the train stop at Moore's Station (along the canal, at the end of Pleasant Valley Rd.).  It may also have been used to fuel an ice box in the farmhouse.  One account suggests that neighbors called the farm "the ice farm," and stopped to buy ice for use in their own market or milk wagons.
