A popular system for keeping hogs was to build a simple shelter in an enclosed pasture.  Downwind of the house and barn, the current location is one of several sites that may have been used within a system of rotating pastures.  A local oral history suggests that in the early part of the 20th century, some farmers in Pleasant Valley raised hogs for sale in Philadelphia - where pork prices were good.
