Chickens provided meat and eggs for the farm family, as well as cash from surplus sales.  The building is a reproduction of a common design, and located near the site of the one present in 1900.  Note that the location allowed the family to keep a protective eye on it from the back door of the farmhouse.  Chickens ran (and run today) in the orchard during the day.  They roost inside the building at night, safe from varmints.
