Dave and Tevis celebrate the completion of their work by attaching a stalk of broom corn to the rafter peak for good luck and as a tribute to the natural materials used in the barn and the cooperative effort used by farmers in raising their barns. The Henry Philips Barn, although more complex than this small barn, was raised in the mid-nineteenth century with the same team spirit.
