Once the ends are marked out, a string can be used to create a straight line, held at the end by nails. A series of notches is then cut into the log to the line (without cutting the string, preferably). This can be done with either a saw or an axe, though using an axe is the more traditional method.

Tevis cutting notches with a long handled axThe easiest method with an axe is to stand on top of the log and strike between your feet. For this, a long handled axe is preferable, so you don't have to bend down so far. The larger and heavier the axe, the more quickly these notches can be made, though a heavier axe is more tiring to swing.
