The first step is to mark out the log. After squaring off the ends of the log the shape of the desired timber is marked on it, making sure that the side faces are parallel and vertical and that the top and bottom are likewise level. The log is placed on logs or pieces of timber to raise it slightly off the ground, and held in place with metal "dogs," which are hammered into the log to be hewn and the wood it is placed upon. These dogs keep the log from moving while it is being worked upon. It is important at all times to hold the log so that the face you are working on is vertical and plumb.
