Restoration Discoveries & Questions

During the preceding week siding was removed from the north and east walls of the 1920s extension. The foundations were exposed and several holes were dug to determine the depth of the foundation. These holes reveal very shallow foundations with no footings. Stacks of cribbing inside the extension are set up along both the north and east walls to provide support.

March 16, 2002
By the end of this week the 1920s extension area was supported by interior cribbing along the east wall and by interior and exterior cribbing supporting beams and jacks on the north wall.

A group of FarmHand parents and younger volunteers working under the direction of Jim McDonough began the process of digging the foundation trench for the north wall of the 1920s extension. The original foundation was only 12-14 inches below grade and was totally inadequate as a foundation. The restoration foundation will be dug 3-4 foot deep and provide a cinder block and concrete base for a top layering of stone.

April 20, 2002
The north wall foundation trench was dug but about one foot less than the east wall. During the work on Saturday this trench was deepened by a volunteer.

During the previous week Thom Livingston and Jim MacDonough had made a three course cement block foundation for the north and east walls of the 1920s extension.

The cement block foundation for the 1920s extension was prepared for the field stone layer. The trenching was filled in. During the day on May 5 Thom Livingston shaped and laid stones at the northeast corner making a secure point for the northeast corner post. He also made pillars where support posts that would serve as doorjambs would be placed. One of these was on the east wall and the other was on the north wall. During the previous week stones had been collected from the creek bed and placed on pallets for Thom to select stones from. On Saturday a few additional stones were retrieved to fit specific needs that Thom had.

During the previous week additional work was done by Thom Livingston on the foundation on both the east and north walls. The timbers for the sills were partially placed on the foundation.
