Restoration Discoveries & Questions

At the end of January 2002 we installed the new sill for the West Wall, and that allowed us to install the new section of the corner post in the southwest corner. We were then also able to put in the new piece of the tie beam over the doorway at the west end of the South Wall.

photo - Installation of new piece of the corner post. Note how the cribbing has been used to create scaffolding for this work.
photo - The new corner post in place. Note the splice to the original upper part of the post and the mortise hole for the tie beam. Also note that the deteriorated portion of the tie beam has been cut away and the cut for the splice has been made.
photo - Close-up of the new piece spliced to the tie beam. Note the completed mortise and tennon joint.
photo - Overview of the southwest corner in February 2002. Note the work done on the south and west walls and the connection of the corner post to the new sill on the west wall.

photo - This photo of the horse barn taken on May 31, 2003 shows the new siding and doors. Underneath the new siding, of course, the timberframe structure of the barn has been restored with new sills and wood spliced into posts and beams to stablize the structure.
