Our Barn's a New Yorker

1840s

Construction of the Henry Phillips Barn has been estimated to have taken place about 1840.  Henry had acquired title to the farm in 1809 so there was undoubtedly an earlier barn.  This barn was built when Henry was in his prime and apparently prospering as a farmer.  The first two sections were built together to form an "L" with a south facing barnyard.  Part A was a four-bay English barn probably used to house horses and perhaps other livestock.  Part B was a three-bay English barn set up for grain processing and storage.  The large, drive-through central doors on both the north and south walls allowed a hay or grain bearing wagon to enter and exit the barn.
