Raising the Charles Fish Barn - Bent E

After Bent D, Bent E was raised in same manner.
Before tying Bent E to Bent D, adjustments were made to the mortise hole for one of the girts.
The tenons also had to be measured and given final shape before raising the girt into position.
Just like raising the bent, the girt is raised into position using a combination of block and tackle and human muscle power.
Once in position, the bents can be separated using block and tackle to allow the tenons to slide into the mortise holes and then bring the bents back to vertical.
After completing one girt, the other is put in place along with its diagonal brace. In this photo the tenon is clearly visible entering the mortise hole. The hole for the peg that will hold the joint together is also visible on the post. |
