Raising the Charles Fish Barn - Bent C |

Bent C was assembled and ready for raising after having pegs inserted and pounded home by visitors and area school children (see below).
Alex Greenwood of the New Jersey Barn Company adjusts the block and tackle for one of the gin poles in preparation for raising Bent C.
Block and tackle were also connected to the bent to be raised and Bent B already in place. With ropes anchoring the bent in both directions it can be secured until connected by timber girts to Bent B.
While visitors pulled on four ropes connected to the bent, the lifting crew started raising the bent by pushing it as high as they could.
When the bent was a high as could be reached, each lifter in turn picked up a spike tipped pole to extend the reach.
Finally, 16 foot pikes were used to finish the job. This photo shows the ropes rigged to lift the bent from the jin poles and bent B.
Looking from the other side, finally Bent C is raised to the vertical position and even tension on the four ropes keeps the bent up and allows for opening and closing the gap between Bents B and C for inserting the connecting girts.
Bent C has now been raised and anchored to Bent B by timber girts at both ends. (Bent raising sequence of photos by Matt Miller) |
