Except that everyone is ten years older, the family looks very much the same as in 1850. There are different live-in laborers and for some reason Andrew is indicated as head of household and sole owner of the farm. Perhaps the enumerator found it easier to list it that way and not divide the value in half as was done by the enumerator in 1850. Perhaps Andrew was the one spoken to by the enumerator. We know from other records that the farm was still jointly owned. Indeed, in the agricultural schedule both names are given as owners, unlike in 1850 when Charles was indicated as the owner. 1860 US Census - Hopewell Township, Mercer County, New Jersey Andrew Fish white male age 66, a farmer,
real estate $10,000, personal estate $6,000, born in NJ 1860 US Census - Agricultural Schedule for Charles and Andrew Fish Improved Acres 80 [I don't understand why fewer than 140 acres are given. There is no evidence that any acres had been sold off and when the farm was sold in 1878 it was described as the complete farm that had been purchased in 1838. There is also a discrepancy between the value of farm given in the populatin census and the agricultural schedule.] Horses 4 Bushels of Wheat 30 Value of Slaughtered Livestock $215 |
