Fish Family Genealogy

Our first glimpse of the family is found in the 1830 US Census.  Census records for previous census years (1790-1820) do not survive for New Jersey.  In 1830 we find Charles as a young man living with his parents, Joseph and Penelope, in Amwell Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.  The 1830 Census only listed heads of household by name and then gave the number of people in various age and gender categories.  Joseph Fish is head of the family and the listing below shows the census data with some family members identified.  There are several people who cannot be identified yet.

Joseph Fish family

1 male under 5
1 male age 10-15
1 male age 20-30 - This would be Charles
1 male age 30-40 - This would be Andrew
1 male age 70-80 - This would be the father - Joseph

2 females age 10-15 - One would be Margaret
2 females age 15-20
1 female age 30-40
1 female age 50-60 - The would be the mother - Penelope

This was the family situation about eight years before Andrew and Charles purchased their own farm.  See the year 1840 for the family situation two years after they purchased the farm.
