One of American history’s most famous cows will take center stage at Howell Living History Farm on Friday, May 29 when Edith Sprague of Allentown presents “On the Road with Elsie” – a talk and photographic tour about her travels with her family’s cow when it became the mascot of the Borden Milk Company. The presentation will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Charles Fish Barn, Howell Farm’s interpretive center and auditorium. Admission is free, with seating available on a first come, first serve basis. The program is the first in a series of dairy-related events that will take place at the farm in the coming weeks, including Dairy Day (June 6), Ice Cream Party (July 4) and the birth of a calf in late July. During “On the Road with Elsie,” Sprague will tell the story of her role as Elsie’s owner and handler during World War II on a tour that criss-crossed the country and raised $10 million for the war effort through the sale of war bonds. Following the presentation, there will be opportunities to meet Sprague, whose life-long interest in farming and agricultural education continues to keep her “on tour.” |
